Proxy Sites-An Overview

Proxy sites are websites that allow you to surf the web anonymously. The proxy site will redirect the signal from your computer through a proxy server, making it appear as though you are somewhere you are not.

Any computer that is connected to the internet has an IP address. An IP, or internet protocol, address is a group of numbers that individually and specifically identifies every computer that is connected to the internet. This identification includes the actual location of that computer.

A proxy site will basically redirect the traffic from your computer through a proxy server, replacing your IP address with the address of that proxy server. So now, rather than an address leading back to the computer in your living room at 123 Main St, All town USA, your IP address may appear to be from anywhere else in the world.

Another use for proxy sites is to bypass security protocols to gain access to websites that may have been blocked. Many companies with multiple computers having access to the internet through a network, including schools, customer service agencies, etc, have restricted access to the internet or to specific websites or types of websites based upon certain content or keywords. These restrictions are generally set up on the originating server using a firewall. Using a proxy server, the proxy site can by-pass the internet security protocols that have been implemented on the network.

Proxy sites are also an excellent method for protecting your computer from threats through malware or adware. Since the actual IP address of your computer is masked by the proxy server, the invasive programming does not make it back to your computer.

How do you use a proxy site? From your home, or work, computer, simply enter the address of the proxy site into your address bar. The proxy site addresses are available for free from some providers and for a price from providers that include other services along with the proxy.

Once you have entered the proxy site, you will be presented with a form. You will be prompted to enter a web address on this form. Once you click on submit, this form will then redirect you to the requested website, through the proxy site. The proxy site, in essence, becomes your server, assigning a new IP address. As long as you remain on the new website, your IP address is cloaked, and full access is enabled.

One of the caveats to using a proxy site is that you must know the web address that you want to access to be able to use it. Unlike a normal web browser, like Internet Explorer or Google, proxy sites are not search capable. . You cannot do a keyword search or term search. You have to do a little homework before trying to access the web using a proxy site.

You can access proxy sites by using available online lists. Most of these lists also provide a subscription service by which you can have new proxy sites emailed directly to you.
